报告1:Disrutive VR Technologies
特邀讲者:Steven J. Santamaria 教授
During his 14 year career at Intel Corporation, Steve led an array of strategic projects like: the Microsoft partnership (Wintel), investment in China Software Park Program (including launches in Hangzhou, Nanjing, Shenzhen and Chengdu), global expansion of the Intel Developer Program, formation of the Visual Computing Group to move Intel into more graphics oriented businesses like VR and 3D animation and the launching of various Intel Service businesses including Intel Online Services, AppUp and Tizen. Prior to Intel, Steve had a successful sales and business development career with companies like: Control Data, Ceridian, Parametric Technology and Giga Information Group. Most recently, Steve has started two companies: WebTuner Corp., an OTT video streaming company and Envelop VR, which created the first Windows desktop environment for virtual reality. Steve’s passion is working with cutting edge and disruptive technologies. He is well versed in identifying trends, understanding ecosystems and creating strategic plans that position technologies into industry control points, generating market presence, share and value. A graduate of Allegheny College, with a degree in Economics, Steve’s education has been further augmented by the Intel Leadership Program and various business and management classes at the Harvard Business School.
报告提要:I plan to talk about Disrutive Technologies. The talk will review some of the past technologies and the market disruptions/opportunities they created. Then I will share my prediction of which future technologies will create similar market disruptions and opportunities. I can also talk about being an entrenpeneur and how to identify market disruption and opportunities.
报告2:Moving Minds to New Worlds:Virtual Reality Since 1966
特邀讲者:Thomas A. Furness III 教授
Professor Furness is widely recognized as the ‘grandfather of virtual reality’. He earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke University and the Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science from the University of Southampton, England. He began his early virtual reality research in 1966 while working for the United States Air Force. He is currently a professor of Industrial and Systems Engineering with adjunct professorships in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington (UW), Seattle, Washington, USA. He is the founder of the Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HIT Lab) at UW and founder and international director of the HIT Lab NZ at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand and the HIT Lab Australia at the University of Tasmania, Launceston, Tasmania. He is also an Erskine Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the University of Canterbury and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tasmania. He is the Founder of the non-profit Virtual World Society dedicated to bringing together hearts and minds through virtual reality to solve pervasive problems in the world. He is also helping to form the International Virtual Reality Research Institute in Shenzhen.
Prof. Furness is the inventor of the personal eyewear display, the virtual retinal display with its lightwave technology, the HALO display and holds many patents in advanced sensor, display and interface technologies. With his colleagues Dr. Furness has started 27 companies, two of which are traded on NASDAQ at a market capitalization of > $ 8 B (USD). In 1998 he received the Discover Award for his invention of the virtual retinal display and has since received the Satava Award for VR in Medicine, the AWE Lifetime Achievement Award, the IEEE VR Career Achievement, and the VRLA Foundation Proto Founder’s Award for his pioneering work in virtual and augmented reality.
报告提要: Over a career spanning 51 years, Prof. Tom Furness has been explored and developed technology for increasing bandwidth to the brain and between brains. His work has encompassed fighter cockpits, virtual reality, retinal displays, educational tools, medical simulators, pain, phobias, molecular modeling, scanning fiber endoscopes and entertainment systems. His quest has been punctuated with side trips and ‘aha’ experiences that have led to unanticipated destinations. Dr. Furness plans to talk about lessons learned on his journey including unexpected delights…with an aim to inspire, entertain and challenge.
